Why We Were Created?

By: Joshua Ball ( My Husband )

A few months ago while having dinner with one of my mentors, who also happens to be my pastor, we began talking about Stephen Covey’s book The 8th Habit. My mentor just finished the book and told me how great it was and he even let me borrow his copy of the book. After reading just a few pages it was evident that I would have to get my own copy so I could highlight and mark up all of the profound knowledge it had to offer. As I read, the book began to tell a story about the great Albert Einstein who was asked this question. “If you could ask God one question what would it be?” Albert Einstein said “I would ask God how did the universe start, because everything after that is just math.” But after thinking for a while, Einstein changed his mind and said “Instead I would ask why was the universe created, because then I would know the meaning of my own life.”

Asking great questions is at the beginning of discovering the best answers which then leads to acquiring profound knowledge. Albert Einstein asked a great question.

Why was the universe created? What is it that will give my life meaning?

As followers of Jesus Christ, our guide, our compass, our manual on how to live is and will always be the Bible. So in order to answer Einstein’s question as to why we were created we must go to our source, Jesus and His word.

In Revelation chapter 4 John writes about a vision he has while being in the spirit. He finds himself around the throne of Jesus and he gives a beautiful pictorial of heaven and how God’s creations are surrounding the throne as well and how they worship without ceasing. As the chapter continues, John talks about the elders that are worshiping also and how they proclaim in verse 11

“Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honour and power: for thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.”

Sometimes when we seek answers we find them in the most subtle of ways. Right there in the scripture we find our meaning for being here, we discover the reason for our existence. “For thou hast created all things, and for thy pleasure they are and were created.” We were made to give God pleasure! Truly He made everything for Himself! But can it really be that simple? My whole life, the reason I’m living here and now is to simply give God pleasure? According to the Bible yes! It is indeed that simple! And as we continue living and learning we’ll realize that a lot of things in life are very simple! It’s us that can make life more difficult than necessary sometimes.

So if we were made to give God pleasure, how do we do that so to speak? It begins when we fully give our lives to Him! When we make up in our minds and hearts that we are going to turn away from our desires and our way of thinking and living to pursue Him! It continues as we draw closer to Him in a private and intimate relationship! When we give, when we pray, and when we fast we are giving Him pleasure! Jesus says in Mark chapter 12

“The first of all the commandments is, Hear, O Israel; The Lord our God is one Lord: And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment. And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.”

When we decide that the focus of our lives will be to love God and love people, we will be doing what we were created to do, give God pleasure! Everything else just falls into place after that and our lives will have the deepest of meaning and the greatest of fulfillment!
